Cynthia's father was Isaac Jarrett, well-known in the history of the State, and son of John Jarrett, one of the earliest salt makers of the the Kanawha Valley.

Cynthia married Columbus Shrewsbury in 1859. Both she and her husband were members of the Baptist Church. Their children were Fanny E., John H., Hattie C., George H., Lucy H., and Herman J. Mrs. Shrewsbury died February 8, 1890, after a life of fidelity to her husband, and devoted to good works.
