John Daniel "J. D." Presson was the son of John Bunyan Presson and Elizabeth Emeline* (Mullis) Presson.

John married Melissa Allen Cain, daughter of Marcellous Cain and Sinda Rilla (Presson) Cain, in Benton CO, TN on May 12, 1871.

John was a farmer, but after his wife Melissa's passing, he worked as a carpenter for the railroad. This job required that John travel most of the time. John and Melissa's youngest surviving children, Elmer, Gus, and Allen, were in essence "raised" by their older sisters, and the husband's of two of those sisters.

* Emeline is listed in records with various spelling: Emaline, Emmeline, Emmaline, & Emeline. It is important to remember that many people in this time period spelled phonetically, and therefore, any of these spellings seemed appropriate to them.
