John married Melissa Allen Cain, daughter of Marcellous Cain and Sinda Rilla (Presson) Cain, in Benton CO, TN on May 12, 1871.
John was a farmer, but after his wife Melissa's passing, he worked as a carpenter for the railroad. This job required that John travel most of the time. John and Melissa's youngest surviving children, Elmer, Gus, and Allen, were in essence "raised" by their older sisters, and the husband's of two of those sisters.
