Katie was born to James Nelson and Catherine (Batterson) Montgomery in Houston, Texas. Some of her siblings were: Janet Anna, Mary Emily, Ellen Amelia, James W, William Nelson, Francis (Frank), Isaac Owen, and Travis.

Katie married Clarence W Hurd [Senior] on September 21, 1881, in Harris County, Texas. The couple had two children--Glenn Ivy and Clarence Wilford Hurd Junior.
