Newspaper Obituary - April 29, 1954 Sandy Creek News - Funeral Service Held Tuesday for Mrs. Blount, 94 - The funeral of Jessie Ackley Blount, widow of George R. Blount, was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. Wallace Parker. Rev. Leland Webster, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated and burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Bearers were her grandsons, Robert Parker, George Blount, Thomas Blount, John Parker, Charles Blount, also Waren Hollis, M.D. Mrs. Blount, who observed her 94th birthday last August, suffered a heart block six days before her death which occurred in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Thursday, April 22, 1954 at 2 p.m. For the past 30 years, Mrs. Blount has been accustomed to spending her winters at her home in Florida with her daughter, Miss Mildred Blount. They returned here for the summer months, including some time at their cottage on Renshaw Bay. She had enjoyed exceptionally good health for a person of her years, and up until the past five years was alert and interested in the activities of her family and incurrent national and international affairs - Taught for Ten Years - Born August 21, 1859 in Westdale, she was the daughter of Peter and Gafelia Ackley. She attended school in Westdale where she spent her early life and later continued her studies at Oswego Normal school. She taught for ten years in schools in this area, including Belleville, also Redfield and other schools in Oswego county. While teaching in Ricard she met George R. Blount, son of Aroma and Phoebe Thomas Blount, to whom she was married on July 19, 1888 at her home in Westdale. They came to Lacona in 1894 where Mr. Blount erected a small plant for the manufacture of rockers which he sold to various chair manufactures, and also engaged in the wholesale lumber business. The business prospered, expanded and later developed into the present firms of the Blount Lumber Company and Blount-Parker Corp. Mr. Blount died February 27, 1932. Mrs. Blount was an active member of the First Methodist church for many years and was connected with both the home and foreign missionary societies of the church. She was a member of the Ladies Wednesday Club and served as fifth district chairman of the Northern New York Federation of Women's Clubs. She was also affiliated with the Ontario Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Pulaski, and with the local branch of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. - Travel Abroad - In 1938 she traveled abroad. Alert and active, she was the marvel of the group, being able to maintain the pace of her fellow tourists, all of whom were much younger than herself. She was feted by the group on her 79th birthday in Paris. Her interest in people was exceptionally keen and served to draw those of all ages into her circle of friendship. She was especially interested in young people and in helping them attain higher education. Surviving are their five children, Miss Mildred Blount, Howard Blount, Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) Keefer of Pittsburgh, Pa., Floyd Blount and Mrs. H. Wallace (Florence) Parker, also ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
