Newspaper Obituary - December 15, 1921 Sandy Creek News - Mason Bettinger - Mason Bettinger passed away the home of his son, Alfred, Friday morning at 5 o'clock. About five weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis from which he did not rally. He was born in the adjoining town of Richland, Aug. 2, 1835, the son of Jacob and Margaret Harter Bettinger of Madison county. His grandparents were Philip and Catherine Bettinger who were natives of the Mohawk Valley and at an early day came to Sandy Creek where they settled on the farm which has since been in the family until a few years ago when it was sold to the late W. H. H. Scott and became the western portion of that farm. It embraced 70 acres and was in the family since its original settlement. The grandfather, Philip Bettinger was in the war of 1812 and was stationed at Sackets Harbor. The family was always identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church. E. L. Hoffman of Syracuse officiated at the funeral, which was held on Monday at 1 p.m., burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Mr. Bettinger was a great lover of the horse and always drove a fine pair in his active years. At the time of his death, at a ripe age of 86 years, he was one of the oldest life long citizens of the town. He enjoyed good health until his last illness and was about town most every pleasant day. In February 1862 he was married to Miss Lydia Ann Colon, who died six months after the daughter, Nora, was born. Five years ago he married Miss Evelyn Sprague and to them were born two sons, Lawrence and Alfred, who with the mother and daughter, Mrs. Charles McCune survive together with twelve grandchildren, Maurice McCune, Mason McCune, Merle McCune, and Chas. McCune Jr., sons of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCune. Randolph, Ruport, Doris, Newton, Frederic, Oscar and Annette, children of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bettinger and Janeth, daughter of Alfred Bettinger, also two grandchildren, Donald, son of Merle McCune and Ernestine, a daughter of Maurice McCune.
