Newspaper Obituary - June 28, 1951 Sandy Creek News - Last Rites to Be Held Saturday for Miss Bartlett - Miss Maud Evangeline Bartlett, a resident of this community for nearly 40 years, died last evening, June 27, 1951 at her home. She had been in failing health for some time, and largely confined to her home for the past two years. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Weston and Woodard Funeral home with the Rev. Winton Halsted, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Miss Bartlett was born October 3, 1965 in Durand, Wis., the daughter of Milton Duane Bartlett and Mary Lavina Brewster Bartlett. She is a descendant of Elder William Brewster at whose, manor house in England the Pilgrim fathers had their church. He later became their spiritual teacher after their landing on the shores of the new world three centuries ago. A later generation settled in Brewster's Settlement in the town of Ellisburg where Miss Bartletts mother was born. Her father at the age of 29 served as State senator in Wisconsin, enlisting for duty in the Civil War the following year. He served as district judge and was prominent in the legal profession and in the political circles. - Came Here in 1914 - The family later resided in Buffalo, coming to Sandy Creek about 1914 where Miss Bartlett made a home for her mother and brother, Guy P. Bartlett, tenderly caring for her mother in her later years, and her brother in his last illness. Following the death of her brother in 1946 a sister, Mrs. F. B. Griffith of Antos, Calif, came to make her home with her, they being the only survivors of a family of eight children. Mrs. Griffin died here in 1947. Miss Bartlett is survived by a niece, May Bartlett Griffy of Houston, Texas. Miss Bartlett was engaged in secretarial work at the Corse Press for many years. She attended the Congregational chruch and later the First Methodist church; she was a member of Lake Ontario Chapter, OES, serving as treasurer over an extended period and was a member and past president of the Ladies Wednesday Club.
