Baron William Hilton and Lord Biddick was of Hilton and Biddick, today both part of the City of Sunderland, Durham. He was the son of Baron William Hilton and Sibill Lumley. He married Margaret Metcalfe of Nappa, Yorkshire daughter of James Metcalfe and Margaret Pigott. William gained the Hilton estate, including Hylton Castle, today located in the North Hylton area of Sunderland, after the death of his brother Thomas Hilton who died childless. William was the father of eleven children: Dorothy wive of Robert Dalton then Michael Constable, Sibyl wife of Mr. Quintaine, Margery wife of Richard Vavsor, Anne wife of John Baxter, Baron William husband of Anne Yorke, Robert, Ralph, Katherine, Ellen (Helen) wife of John Hosley, Mark Roger husband of Ellen Mainwaring and Elizabeth wife of Marmaduke Thirkeld.
