John Edward Roach was the son of William B. Roach, Jr. and Elizabeth Gunby. He attended what was then known as Delaware College. What became Delaware College started prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1833, the Delaware General Assembly passed "An Act to Establish a College at Newark", and the next year, Newark College opened. It changed its name in 1843 to Delaware College and it merged with the Academy of Newark. Today, this college is know as the University of Delaware.

John Edward Roach did not graduate from Delaware College. He was tragically stabbed during a student "inter-class free-for-all in a crowded room" and staggered out to die on the building's threshold. The account of this event and the subsequent court proceedings can be read in "Murder at Delaware College: The Death of John Edward Roach, March 30, 1858," by Richard C. Quick. It's a published thesis available at the University of Delaware library.
