Her first job was with the Ration Office in Algona. In 1943, Marjorie became a WAVE when she enlisted in the armed services. She was transferred to Washington, D.C. where she served as a Yeoman for the Navy Department. While there, she met and married her husband of 22 years, Raymond R. Howard of White Sulphur Springs, WV. They had two children, Richard and Norma and shortly thereafter moved to Falls Church, VA. Marjorie then worked in the cash office of a JC Penney store for 14 years before rejoining the government as a civilian with the Department of Defense.
Marjorie was married to her second husband, Henry Jesse Yates, for 24 years. They moved to a farm in Culpeper, VA where they raised prized sheep and chickens. She continued to work for Defense in Charlottesville, VA until her retirement in 1985. Marjorie remained in Culpeper until 2001 when she moved back to Falls Church next door to her daughter.
Marjorie enjoyed going to a women's exercise center where she earned a T-shirt for more than 800 workouts. Later, she attended an adult day care center two or three times a week. She was a member of the Assembly of Gods church and the American Legion. Other hobbies included sewing and quilting. She often made smocks for behind-the-counter workers and throws for friends. She loved to travel and for a while, made yearly trips back to Algona.
Marjorie Jane Yates died at home on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and two sisters Doris M. Richter and Betty Lou Fisher, both of Algona.
Marjorie leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Howard, and daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Gary Andes, two grandchildren, Joseph Steele and Stephanie Cecil and two great grandchildren, Sarah Bowling and Gavin Cecil.
She will be laid to rest at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA.
