Eppie Lee Dixon Rhodes was born in Verona, North Carolina on June 22, 1913 to Burrel W. and Lorena Deal Dixon. She was the youngest of ten Dixon children that lived to maturity (Joseph Franklin, Ada Ann, Elizabeth “Betty”, Wilbur W., Walter Raleigh, John Horace, Odie Bishop, Mary Ethel and Ebbo B.). She also had one older half brother, A Bill.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 2pm at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville. Elder Phillip Whittington will be officiating and burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.

Eppie grew up on the New River in Onslow County where she enjoyed a life of abundant seafood and hard work. In 1931 she married Ivey A. Rhodes and they made their home in the same area of Onslow County. Known for her excellent cooking skills, she worked hard on the farm, loved gardening and quilting. She enjoyed cooking for large crowds whether it was a family reunion, church dinner, lunch for a hungry crew barning tobacco or Christmas breakfast for the family. Eppie and Ivey remained in Verona until the property was secured by the government for the Camp Lejeune Marine Base in 1941. They moved to the southwest area of Onslow County where they continued farm.

Eppie was a valued member of the community and enjoyed being a part of “get-togethers” like quilting with the neighborhood women, barning tobacco, putting up fresh vegetables or killing hogs. She will be greatly missed by the many friends that have been such an integral part of her life over the past 101 years.

A strong believer in the Primitive Baptist doctrine, Eppie joined the Old Stones Bay Primitive Baptist Church on the fifth Sunday in November 1930. She remained a member of this church until the church closed its doors due to lack of membership. She moved her membership to Davis Memorial and was a faithful member of the church, traveling to sister churches as far away as Alabama.

A “real granddaughter” of a Confederate Veteran, Eppie was a proud member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Eppie’s greatest joy was her family. She shared a lifetime of love, wisdom and special experiences with each of them that will be remembered and cherished for years to come. In death she has taken a piece of each family member’s heart but has left them with so much more in return.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ivey “A” Rhodes, son Ivey Eugene Rhodes, granddaughter Iris Brantley Woodson Reel, son-in-law Elmond A. Brantley and her parents and siblings. She is survived by son, Jimmy C. Rhodes (Nadine); daughters Dorothy R. Brantley and Nancy R. Bishop (Charles). She also leaves behind grandchildren; Melissa Brantley, Hight, Ivy Brantley Reid, Dale Bishop, Anthony Bishop, Leslie Bishop, Ashley Bishop, Debbie Berg and Elizabeth Barnes; 12 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Donations can be made in memory of Eppie Rhodes (in memo line) to Carobell, Inc., 198 Cinnamon Dr., Hubert, NC 28539.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
