During the Civil War, Emma was a signatory for Confederate bonds and notes on which she signed her name "E. Tradewell." Her husband's belligerent refusal to take the oath of allegiance after the war meant that he could not continue his law practice or run for political office, leaving his family nearly destitute. Emma became the family's prime means of financial support by taking in needlework and by selling off family silver and heirlooms. James died in 1880, leaving Emma with two young daughters aged 7 & 9. Emma's eldest daughter Mamie had married in 1877 to a railroad conductor and may have been able provide some support to her mother, along with her brother Hugh who was 18 at his father's death. Hugh died a bachelor in 1896 and Emma's daughter Lucile married in 1901 to Gus Sylvan, a Columbia jeweler who immediately took up the role of benefactor for Emma, her children, and grandchildren. Emma is pictured above with her granddaughter Frances Sylvan. (See her profile in WikiTree for more biographical and family information.)
