Russell was born October 13, 1922 in Atwood to Arthur and Dora (Gardner) DeShields. He was raised in Atwood his entire life. Russell was married to Ruth Durham on June 22, 1946 at the First Baptist Church, Holdenville and they have been married for 59 years.
Russell worked for the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association, Peanut Administrative Committee and manager of the Holdenville Peanut Company until the late 70's when he returned to his first love of farming.
The Russell DeShields family was chosen the outstanding Farm Family from Hughes County in 1985. Russell served as Farm Bureau Treasurer, Atwood Nazarene Church Trustee, Atwood School Board Member until Atwood School closed in 1967, and President of the Holdenville Changer of Commerce Annual Gospel Singing. He sang gospel music for many years with the Atwood Singers, who included Paul West, Geneva Pierce, Glenn Webb and Lavern Cates.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Dora DeShields; infant son, David Arthur DeShields; infant grandson, Matthew Wayne Haas; and sisters, Lavon Bennett and Leta Pound.
Survivors are his wife, Ruth DeShields of the home; sons, Jess (Mick) Durham and wife, Nelda of Holdenville and Gary DeShields and wife, Truby of Atwood; daughters, Jenna Haas and husband Larry of Broken Arrow, and Brenda Beck and husband, Doug of Atwood; brother, Elton DeShields and wife, Florence of Spokane, Washington; grandchildren, Brian Durham and wife, Karen of Harrah, Jessica Huddleston and husband, Mike of Stonewall, Michael Haas and wife, Gina of Sand Springs, Jennifer Barker and her husband, Scot of Edmond, Kimberly Haas of Broken Arrow, Jay DeShields of Broken Arrow and Jeremy Beck of Ada; great grandchildren Emily Durham . . ."
