Kathryn Mae Van Veen was the youngest of four children that were born to Cornelius E. and Mary Koopmans Van Veen. She was born on October 17, 1917, near Eddyville, Iowa. Kathy attended the Pella Public Schools in Pella, Iowa and graduated from Pella High School in 1935.

As a young girl Kathy was employed in a hatchery and worked at the Rolscreen Company in Pella. She then spent over 50 years at Wilson Jewelry and later Spreacker Jewelry in Pella as a sales clerk.

Everyone associated there along with her late friend, Susie Boot, almost became her family as they did just about everything together. This affiliation became a lifetime commitment for Kathy. When not working Kathy pursued her other interests. She played the piano and was a lover of nature and crafts. She thoroughly enjoyed working in the garden and replenished her energy by eating bakery cookies and CHOCOLATE. She acquired an affinity for DOGS and enjoyed bringing them to her home.

Kathy was a kind and loving person and displayed these attributes by volunteering at her church and the nursing home. She taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church for 20 years. For over 35 years Kathy volunteered at the Pella Community Nursing Home and loved the residents and enjoyed pushing them around.

Ironically in the end of her life Kathy was a recipient of this care and attention. In June of 2010 Kathy became a resident in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center where she passed away Tuesday evening, April 26, 2011, at the age of 93 years.

Kathy will long be remembered by her nieces and nephews whom she treated as if they were her own children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius and Mary Van Veen; her two brothers and their wives: Frank and Dorothy Van Veen, Neal and Cora Van Veen; her sister Elizabeth (Betty) and her husband, Dr. Alvin E. Evers; and a special niece, Mary J. Evers.
