Newspaper Obituary - January 9, 1964 Sandy Creek News - George Bacon's Death Occurs - The funeral of George H. Bacon, well known granger and a resident of this village since 1936, was held Saturday afternoon. Mr. bacon, who was 75, died Dec. 31, 1963 at his home on Ellisburg street. He had suffered a series of strokes over the past four years. George Harrison Bacon was born in Antwerp Nov. 10, 1888, a son of George C. and Rachel Streeter Bacon. He attended Antwerp schools and worked later as a trucker for the W. H. Loomis Talc company in Gouverneur. He also constructed the original greens on the Star Lake Inn golf course and was head green keeper for nine years - 50th Anniversary Noted - March 6, 1913 he married Miss Alice Thompson of Sandy Creek. The wedding took place in Watertown, Rev. D. C. Johnson officiating. They lived in Antwerp, Star Lake, Gouverneur and since 1936 had been Sandy Creek residents. Mr. Bacon was a retired carpenter. He and Mrs. Bacon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, when friends and relatives gathered at Sandy Creek Grange to honor them. Mr. Bacon was a member of Sandy Creek Lodge F. and A. M. in which he served as tiler, and a past master of the Sandy Creek Grange. He had been especially active in the Grange, and served as a member of its degree teams. At the funeral, held Saturday afternoon at the Weston and Woodard funeral parlors, Rev. Richard Aylor, pastor of Sandy Creek Baptist church, officiated. Serving as bearers were Edward Wright, Paul and Clyde Bacon of Watertown and Jesse Bacon of Hannibal. All are nephews. Friday evening, a Masonic service was held by members of Sandy Creek Lodge No. 564 and members of Sandy Creek Grange also attended this as a group. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery in the spring. - Surviving Relatives - Surviving Mr. Bacon, besides his wife, Mrs. Alice Thompson Bacon, are a son, Ralph T. Bacon, Adams; a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Jean) Roberts, Sandy Creek; two sisters.
