*** Carl J. Back - May 17, 1875 - August 29, 1930.

Newspaper Obituary - September 4, 1930 Sandy Creek News - Carl Back - The community was deeply shocked and grieved by the sudden and premature death of Carl Back at his home, Central Hotel, Lacona, Tuesday morning, August 29, 1930. Without seeming warning he passed away, bringing sorrow into the lives of friends that knew him and loved him. He was born in the Town of Croghan, May 17, 1875, being a son of Christopher and Christine Marshall Back who were natives of Alsace-Lorraine, a French province annexed in 1870 by Germany and recovered by France in 1918. Though born in America, his parents taught him French, German and English, which he spoke fluently. He was united in marriage with Miss Edith Joyner October 10, 1910, who survives him and who has the sympathy of the community in this hour of her sorrow. He also is survived by three sons, Roderick, Ira and Grant, and by two brothers, Joseph Back, Lowville, and Peter Back, Croghan, and by three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bush, Utica, Mrs. E. M. Millett, Newark, N.J., and Mrs. John Bush, Belfast. At Croghan, his former home, he was engaged in the milk business until eleven years ago when he moved to Lacona to conduct the hostelry known as the Central Hotel. By reason of his courtesy, affable manner and pleasing personality, he made his house a place of comfort and hospitality. He gave his best to the well being of his guests, possessing the happy faculty of making the sojourner feel at home. His memorial service was held at his late home Sunday afternoon, August 31, Rev. T. T. Davies in charge. The Community Band played timely and fitting selections. Burial in the family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery. The floral tribute was beautiful and impressive, expressing love and esteem for the one asleep in death. The departed possessed those elements in his character that made him a favorite among those that knew him, congenial, friendly and a willingness on his part to do something for others. He was a good man in the community and he touched life by his smile, warm handshake, friendly attitude and kindness of heart.
