*** Lucy A. Wilder Alton - 1831 - January, 1913. Plot: T

Newspaper Obituary - January 22, 1913 Pulaski Democrat - Awful Death Of Suicide - A death under most agonizing and pitiable circumstances occured recently in Lacona, when Mrs. Lucy Alton, aged 81 years, succumbed after many hours of suffering at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Hubbs, where she made her home, from the effects of drinking a quantity of scalding hot water. Mrs. Alton who had always lived in Lacona, and was highly respected there, was married 20 years ago to Charles Alton, a painter, both bride and groom being at the time past 60 years of age and neither having been married before. Mr. Alton died six or seven years ago, since which time the widow had lived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hubbs. She had a small sum deposited in one of the Watertown savings banks, but aside from this she had no means and was without any near relatives. For some time past she had been very despondent. On the evening when the act that resulted in her death occured, the Hubbs family had retired, and about 10:30 Mrs. Alton came down to the kitchen and going to the stove poured out a quantity of boiling water from the tea kettle. Before Mr. or Mrs. Alton, who had been awakened could make any move to prevent, the age woman swallowed a quantity of the scalding fluid. Mr. hollis, who is county coroner, was hastily summoned, but found that the aged sufferer's lips, mouths and throat were flayed by the scalding draught she had swallowed and he could do little more than alleviate as much as possible her sufferings. She died about 12 hours later. Dr. Hollis, as coroner, found that death resulted from burns sustained by swallowing a quantity of boiling water, taken by the deceased while suffering from despondency.
