Joy was born in Kerens, Texas, to the late John Archie Horn and Mattie Dee Smith Horn. She spent her life caring for others; her parents, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other children in Corsicana. She cared for children in her own home for over 25 years. “Mama Nelson” was proclaimed Corsicana’s Mother of the Year in the late 1960s. Joy was the glue that kept her family together and was responsible for keeping her children close.
It has been said that she used her cooking skills to bring the family together on every occasion. She loved growing African violets and at any time they were too numerous to count in her home. Joy and her sisters performed on KAND Radio singing Gospel favorites for many years. She was a talented seamstress and Billy, Wayne, and John remember the “flour sack” shirts she made for them as young boys. Joy loved her Lord and was a strong Christian woman in every aspect of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Walter Nelson; a daughter, Denise Hambrick and her husband, Eddie; a grandson Michael Nelson; and her siblings; Theron Horn, Doris Horn and Sammie Burns.
Survivors include her sons: Wayne Nelson and wife, Judy, Billy Nelson and wife, Pat, and John Nelson and wife, Rosemary; daughters: Lynette Bailey and husband, Gary, Patresa Bolton, and Vicki Farmer; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Billie Horn Jordan and Raquel Congleton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
