Delphine Susie Clay Barfield, 78, of Danville, IL, and formerly of Karnak, IL, died May 1, 2003, at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.
She was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Grand Chain, IL, the daughter of Mark and Alice McClellan Clay. She married Hobert Barfield Sr. on March 4, 1946. He preceded her in death.
She was employed at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, IL. She was a member of the Clay Memorial Church of God in Christ in Grand Chain, serving as a church mother, Sunday school teacher, pastor's aide, soloist and on the usher board. While in Danville, she attended Victory Temple Worship Center.
She is survived by three sons, Phillip Barfield of Brookfield, WI, Hobert Barfield Jr. and William Barfield, both of Karnak; three daughters, Phyllis Sterling and Dorothy Barfield, both of Milwaukee, WI, and Barbara Roundtree of Danville; two sisters, Fannie McQuay of Highland Park, IL, and Marilyn Newborn of Milwaukee; 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today at the Clay Memorial Church of God in Christ in Grand Chain and prior to services on Friday at Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ in Mounds. Services will be Friday at the Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ in Mounds with Carl J. Whitaker, James V. Watkins and James Arthur Davis officiating. Burial will be Monday at Mound City National Cemetery. Algee's Funeral Home in Carbondale, IL is in charge of arrangements.
