John E. Hugen, son of Henry and Jessie (DeVries) Hugen was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Eddyville. He passed away on July 4 at the Comfort House in Pella at the age of 81 years, ten months and twenty-two days.

In his early childhood, he attended Peoria and Pella Christian Grade Schools. He was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.

Hugen was united in marriage with Wilma Vanden Berg in Pella on August 16, 1940. To this union five children were born. He and Wilma farmed in the Peoria and Pella area for fifty-four years, retiring in 1994. They continued to live on the farm until moving to Pella in November of 2001, where he resided at the time of his death.

Hugen is survived by his five children and their spouses: Howard and Phyllis Hugen of Pella, Bob and Betty Hugen of Knoxville, Jim and Joyce Hugen of Oskaloosa, Nancy and Dan DuPree of Lake Worth, Fla., and Roger and Linda Hugen of Pella.

He also leaves ten grandchildren Amy and Bryan Maach, Ryan and Kelly Hugen, Troy and Brenda Hugen, Robin and Curt Vink, Derek and Lisa Hugen, Scott and Carmen DuPree, Jason and Megan DuPree, Rochelle and Curt Veenstra, Dustin Hugen, and Chad and Kari Vander Linden; and twenty-three great grandchildren; and his sister Marjorie Schimmel; a brother William Hugen and a sister-in-law, Bernice Kredit.

Hugen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Bert and Raymond; a grandson, Ashley Hugen; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hugen.

Hugen spent a great deal of time working in various church organizations and doing volunteer work. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services were held July 8 at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Pastors Arthur Vander Wolde and Sheldon Starkenburg officiated.

Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Memorials may be made to Pella Christian Grade School and Hospice of Pella.
