ALPHA - Virgil L. Calmer, 81, Alpha, died Monday (Jan. 10, 2005) in Seminary Manor, Galesburg.
He was born Feb. 7, 1923 in Oxford Township, the son of Ansker and Myrtle Olson Calmer.
He married Rose V. Knapp on Feb. 24, 1946, in Knox County.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Donavin (and Miriam) Calmer, Roseville, Martin Calmer, Milan, Dennis (and Brenda) Calmer, Morton, and Marion Calmer, Alpha; one sister, Eileen Bohman, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
He graduated from Woodhull High School.
Before his marriage he was employed as a hired hand for Nile McCurdy and later worked for Windish Motors in Galesburg. He farmed for Burrell Barash and later owned and operated his own grain and livestock farms in Knox and Henry counties.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull, where he taught Sunday school for many years, and was a member of the Henry and Knox County Farm Bureaus.
Funeral will be at 10 am Friday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Woodhull, with the Rev. Nancy Jaster officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 8 pm. Thursday with the family present from 4 to 8 pm at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Woodhull. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery.
