Son of Thomas III and Anna Peery.

Company I, 29th Virginia Infantry, Corse's Brigade, Pickett's Division, 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Tazewell County; 20 year-old farmer.
Enlisted on 4/2/1862 at Mouth of Indian, Tazewell, Va. for 3 years' service, he was mustered into "I" Co. VA 29th Infantry as a Private.
Elected Captain 4/20/1862.
Absent, With Leave on Sept & Oct 1862 Roll.
Absent; admitted 9/10/1863 into General Hospital #4, Richmond, VA. with chronic diarrhea on Sept & Oct 1863 Roll; given Medical Furlough 9/20.
Present on Nov & Dec 1864 Roll.
Detailed home 1/24/1865 to arrest deserters.

Postwar he married Sarah Henrietta Repass (8/17/1843 - 7/10/1884) on 11/28/1865. He was a farmer, miller, stock raiser and trader; also served as County Commissioner and Sheriff. Before Sarah died, they had 10 children: Emory Willis, Rev. Rufus Benton, Walton Stuart, Nora Kate, Anna S., Rev. John Carnahan, Josephine Repass, Maude Cassell, Mary Elizabeth, George Gose.
On 6/10/1891, he married 20 year-old Lora Virginia "Jennie" Shawver, with whom he fathered 5 children: James Clair, Sallie Myrtle, Tommie Henrietta, Margaret, Pauline.

The 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment was authorized in November, 1861; contained 5 companies under Colonel A.C. Moore from Abingdon and companies raised in the spring of 1862.
