Before Sarah died, they had 10 children: Emory Willis, Rev. Rufus Benton, Walton Stuart, Nora Kate, Anna S., Rev. John Carnahan, Josephine Repass, Maude Cassell, Mary Elizabeth, George Gose.
On 6/10/1891, he married 20 year-old Lora Virginia "Jennie" Shawver, with whom he fathered 5 children: James Clair, Sallie Myrtle, Tommie Henrietta, Margaret, Pauline.
The 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment was authorized in November, 1861; contained 5 companies under Colonel A.C. Moore from Abingdon and companies raised in the spring of 1862.
