Columbian Progress Sept.14, 1944
Two Listed Killed, One Man Missing In Week's Toll
This week Lt. Sam Dale, of Columbia, long missing, was reported killed in action in France.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam B. Dale received word September 11 that their son, Lt. Sam B. Dale Jr., was killed in action over France on July 4. He had previously been missing

Dale had been leading his squadron home from a strafing mission and was last seen flying low and very fast in an attempt to escape four pursuing German planes. He was out of ammunition. Each of the other planes in his squadron had four jerries in pursuit and was unable to assist him.

Lt. Dale had received the Distinguished Flying Cross "for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight over enemy occupied continental Europe" shortly before his last mission.
A sister, Lt. Katherine Dale, is with the Army Nurses' Corps in England.
