Carl Wesley Sr. died Jan. 14, 1986. He was born Dec. 5, 1895 to M.W. Abernathy and Nora James. They were early day settlers in Jackson County. He married Annye Pearl Maples on November 18, 1917 while serving in the Army in WW One. Later he was a substitute rural main carrier for his father. He drove a horse drawn mail hack that is now one display at the Museum of the wester Prarie in Altus.

He farmed from 1929 to 1941, then was at Altus AFB during WWII, and last worked at at Altus Cotton Compress until retirement in 1959. He moved to Arkansas and was preceded in death by his wife and an infant daughter. Surviving were a son, and 2 daughters; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a brother, on nephew and 1 niece. Masonic graveside services were on Friday, Jan. 17 at Altus Cemetery.
