Obituary for Violet Alma Alsup
Violet Alma Alsup, born May 04, 1913 at home in Greer County, Oklahoma and passed away at home in Laguna Niguel, California, October 28, 2014, at 101 years of age.

She was a widow for 52 years after the death of her beloved husband, Freeman Alsup, in 1962. Her son, Phil Alsup died at age 28, and her oldest daughter, Evelyn Lea died at age 70. She is survived by her youngest daughter, Trena DeLamar, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Violet was the sixth of ten children living on a 60 acre farm. Her life was filled with hard work yet she found the secret of happiness in simple pleasures. She loved picking wild flowers, going to church on Sundays, and drawing the birds and wildlife which lived on the prairie.

Violet was a farmwife for the first seventeen years of her marriage until the family relocated to Southern California in 1951. Gardening and sewing were some of her talents. She made most of her children's school clothes, and even her oldest daughter's wedding dress. Though mostly self educated, she achieved a degree in nursing and worked for ten years as an LVN.

Out of hundreds of people in Orange County, when she was 100 years old, she was selected to be "Queen of the Senior Prom". An honor she was especially proud of. When asked the secret of longevity she would reply "live the good life - one day at a time", "Don't live in the past".

Violet was funny and had a cutting wit, even a little sassy at times, but that is what made her so endearing. She said and did things that other people couldn't get away with. She was a charmer!

For Violet's 100th Birthday a parade was held in her honor, complete with a fire engine escort, a Scottish Bagpiper in the lead, and the Mayor of Laguna Woods riding in an open convertible with Violet. What could top this?... only a day at the races at Santa Anita for her 101st Birthday where a special race was named in her honor and all the people in the grand stand singing "Happy Birthday" to her as she was escorted into the winner's circle.

Like the flower, Violet made the world more beautiful by her presence. Family and friends were the greatest beneficiaries of her kindness, but she could also bring a smile to someone she met in passing. She had the uncanny ability to see and point out to a person something genuinely nice about them.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity in the name of Violet.

The family would like to invite everyone attending the services, to wear their favorite color or a vibrant print to celebrate Violet's bright and outgoing personality.
