Katie was born the 11th and final child of John and Leta (Jackson) Surles. She was their 7th daughter. Family lore says that Leta planned to name the child "Katie Pearl." Dr Dawson, who attended the birth, decided to put "Caroline" on her birth certificate instead. The family always called her Katie. It is noted in WWII records that Katie wrote her legal first name as "Carolina" not Caroline. Perhaps that is the name Dr Dawson wrote on her birth records.

Katie was an energetic, daring and robust child. That energy was well needed when her mother took ill with a malignant brain tumor by 1938. Katie nursed her as best she could. All her older siblings had gone north to earn money to send home or were long deceased.

After her mother died in 1939 her father, John, decided it would be best for Katie to go to Kings Park, NY to live with her married sister, Annie Ruth, and her husband Edgar Banner. Katie finished high school there and went on to Kings Park State Hospital School of Nursing, obtaining her R.N. in June 1945.

Katie immediately enlisted in the Navy, thoroughly enjoying plying her nursing skills and seeing various parts of the world. She particular enjoyed her stay in Cuba.

While working in D.C., Katie met and married her husband. The couple lived in the greater D.C. area for several years as their family grew. They then moved to San Diego by 1960 due to her husband being transferred there for his employment.

Katie died suddenly in 1975. Her siblings were devastated by her departure. They'd lost their sister, Annie Ruth, to an accident just a month before Katie's death.
