Hawkins, Roland Sr. Born July 23, 1911 and passed away peacefully on Saturday January 30, 2010 at age 98. Husband to the late Virginia Jost Hawkins for 66 years; father of Roland Benton Hawkins, Jr and Jennifer Hawkins Bartels; fatherin-law to Nancy Spies Hawkins and Glenn H. Bartels. Grandfather of Andrew and Daniel Hawkins, Jill Bartels Burstein (Simon), and Rebecca and Casey Bartels. He was Operations Superintendent for Gruensfelder Packing Co. from1939 to 1949 and subsequently proprietor of the R. Hawkins Wholesale Meat Co for over 30 years. After his first retirement, he and his wife Virginia went to work for the Royale Orleans from its inception until final retirement in the 1990s. As a young man he was a comp etitive swimmer. He loved all sports, whether as a participant or fan. In later years he enjoyed golf, the "Clubhouse" community at Twin Rivers MO and the many family and friends who will miss his entertaining antics and companionship. He was a participant in the Memory and Aging Study at Washington University Medical School since 1997. Roland donated his brain and body to the Study and Washington University for further research. Services: A Bon Voyage gathering will be held at the Royale Orleans, 2801 Telegraph Rd at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 11. Memories and tributes will be followed by a buffet. Friends of Roland and his family are invited to attend. Contributions may be made to: Washington Univ.
