Inventor. After attending Coe College from 1934 to 1936, he took a job at Corning Glass Works in New York in 1940 as a research director and in 1957 developed CorningWare. The glass became a popular type of cookware known for withstanding extreme heat and cold. It could go from the oven to the dinner table and into the refrigerator or freezer. The glass was so durable the military used it in missile nose cones. His other inventions include Fotoform, Cercor, Pyroceram and Photochromic Ophthalmic glass eyewear. In 1987, he received the National Medal of Technology from then-President Ronald Reagan in recognition of his lifetime of innovations and in 2010, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Stookey, who has 60 patents in his name related to glass and ceramics, died at the age of 99 from complications after hip surgery.
