When World War II broke out, Patterson joined up at age 17 and spent several years as a rear gunner with the British Air Force.
After the war, he married Lorna Elliott from Ballinaman, Killygordon, Co Donegal. They had three lovely daughters. Lorna predeceased him.
Patterson's funeral service was at the Donaghmore Presbyterian Church and he was buried in the graveyard outside the church.
