Sublette - Mickie M. Powell, 94, died October 27, 2014 at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born on August 24, 1920 in Smith Canyon, Colorado, the daughter of Monte and Jessie (Brandon) Cook.
After her mother's death, she came to live with her aunt and uncle, Irvin and Lydia Cook in Sublette. Mickie graduated from Sublette High School in 1939. She went on to nursing school in Garden City at St. Catherine's Nursing School, obtaining her R.N. degree. Mickie worked at hospitals in Garden City, Sublette, and Satanta. She also did private care nursing. Mickie retired from nursing at the age of 70. On May 16, 1943, she married Gerald Powell in Sublette. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1991. Mickie enjoyed cooking, gardening, and baking wedding cakes for friends.
She was a member of the Sublette Church of the Nazarene.
Mickie is survived by one son, Gerald Powell and wife Gayle of North Lake, Texas; three daughters, Vera Asplund and husband Mark of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Beth Stafford and husband Stan of Argile, Texas, and Angela Tanner and husband Rowdy of Alexandria, Kentucky; one sister, Dickie Griffin of Satanta; 16 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mickie is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Irvin Powell; one sister, Bonnie Stoops; and one brother, Donald Cook.
Funeral service will be held at Sublette Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:30 AM with Dr. William Thomas presiding. Burial will follow at Banner Cemetery in Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Friday, October 31, 2014 from noon to 8:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to Sublette Church of the Nazarene in care of the funeral home.
