The Daily Republican, Wednesday Aug 26, 1874: " The XIVth District Republican convention assembled at the court house in Tuscola yesterday at 10 a.m.. The meeting was called to order by W. H. Lamb, Esq., a member of the district committee, and John G. Holden, of Vermilion, chosen temporary chairman, and George Scroggs of Champaign, and J.R. Mosser, of Macon, secretaries."

Decatur Weekly Republican, Thursday July 18, 1878: "At Champaign yesterday took place the funeral of Mrs. Sarah A. Scroggs, widow of Hon. J. W. Scroggs, and mother of Col. George Scroggs, of the GAZETTE. The deceased was a woman of rare mental gifts, and had a host of friends. She had been in feeble health for a long time. The sympathies of a legion of friends will be extended to the bereaved son, who has been called upon within a brief period to lay away in the grave father, wife and mother."

Decatur Daily Review, December 16, 1878: "The health of Col. George Scroggs, editor of the Champaign Gazette and representative elect to the legislature is reported to be in a precarious condition. We sincerely trust the colonel will yet permanently recover his health and strength."

DEATH OF COL. GEORGE SCROGGS.

CHAMPAIGN,. Ill., Oct. 17.—Col. George Scroggs of this city, ex-member of the Illinois legislature and late United States consul at Hamburg, Germany, died yesterday at Denver, Colo., of consumption, aged 38 years.

He was proprietor of the Champaign Gazette, which will continue to be published by his heirs. His wife will arrive here tomorrow night with his remains when the interment will occur. His death is universally regretted here.

George was the son of Doctor John W. Scroggs and his wife, Sarah A. Roach (both died in Champaign County and burial place are not known). George first married 4 June 1868 to Martha F. Stanage, known as Fannie. They had two daughters, Bessie and Frances. After Martha died in 1877, George married a woman named Nancy.
