DECATUR -- Ardis Ilene Gregory, 90, of Decatur, IL prayed for God to take her hand and he answered her prayer on November 2, 2014 at home surrounded by her family.

A service to celebrate Ardis’ life will be held Friday, November 7, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Ardis will be laid to rest next to her husband Glen Richard (Dick) Gregory in Ludwig Cemetery, Moweaqua, IL.

Ardis was born on October 29, 1924 on the family farm in Moweaqua, IL, the daughter of Harry A. and Imo (Fathauer) Ellrich. She graduated from Moweaqua Community High School in 1941 at the age of 16. She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, where she graduated in 1945 at the age of 20 with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting. During her college years she received the bronze tablet for high scholarship. She carried a 5.0 average and was elected to Alpha Lambda Delta freshmen women honorary, Beta Gamma Sigma, Commerce honorary and Phi Kappa Phi, all-University honorary. In addition, she was an officer of the Accountancy Club and a member of Phi Chi Theta, a professional sorority of which she was president. She also received the University of Illinois scholarship key. Her work career began as a graduate at the University of Illinois in accountancy. She then worked at Burtschi and Co. accounting. In 1964 she began working at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Decatur, IL, while there; she was promoted and became the first female accountant in the company. She retired from Bridgestone/Firestone in 1986.

During her lifetime, Ardis became an accomplished pianist and piano teacher. Ardis enjoyed traveling around the United States with her family, and after retirement, she enjoyed many lunches with her friend Mary Zinn and the “boys” at McDonalds.

She was a long time member and choir pianist at Woodland Chapel Presbyterian Church. Upon the church’s reorganization, she found her new church home at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church.

Ardis married her childhood friend, Glen Richard “Dick” Gregory on August 26, 1955. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1983. Together they had one child.

Ardis leaves behind to cherish her memories her only daughter: Denita “Dede” Kay Gregory and partner Rhonda Smith of Decatur, IL; her precious kitty cat: Misty, sister-in-law: Millie Gregory of Medford OR, cherished lifelong friends: Norma Zindel, from high school, Emily Christian, from college, Janice Toca, Nora Howard, Firestone co-workers and member of her church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and step-mother: Alma Ellrich, brother: Myron Ellrich and her sister-in-law: Ruth Ellrich and special friend Claude Jesse.

The family of Ardis I. would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Addai and his nurse Gina for their years of wonderful care and attention. Also a special thanks to Laurie, Danielle, Terri and Tim of Harbor Light Hospice for making Mom’s last days peaceful and comforting. Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street is assisting the family with the arrangements.
