John Cruikshanks Newlands was born in 1913 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, Son of John and Elizabeth Jane Thompson Newlands, of Edinburgh. He had two brothers. He died on July 1, 1941, When his plane, Whitley T4233 102 Squadron crashed at Maria-Hoop Holland........Took off from RAF Topcliffe at 2258 hrs. Shot down by a night-fighter (Hptm Werner Streib I./NJG1) and crashed 0119 hrs
near Diergaarde (Limburg), 12 km SSW of Roermond, Holland. All are buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery.
