Amador county and city are named for Jose Maria Amador y Noriega, a soldier, rancher and miner. Jose was born at the Presidio of San Francisco, was married three times and fathered 21 children. He was living at Whiskey Hill in Santa Cruz County when Thomas Savage recorded Amador's “Memorias sobre la Historia de California,” (Memories about the History of California) in 1877. The manuscript is housed at the Bancroft Library. He was the son of Sergeant Pedro Amador, a Spanish soldier who settled in California in 1771 and Ramona Noriega.
Owner of the land on present day Dublin and San Ramon CA. This was prior to California statehood when it was under the control of Spain and Mexico. His exact birthdate is unknown but at the time of his death he claimed to be 106 years old. During his long life he was married three times and fathered 37 children. Served 18 years in the miltary of Spain and Mexico. He lost his land, selling it due to the uncontrolled settlement by Americans. He then moved to Gilroy where he died.
