Dec. 28, 2002, Chrystal Hansen Smith, 88 died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family. Chrystal was born April 18, 1914, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, the daughter of Parley and Fredricka (Brotherson) Hansen.
She graduated from high school at the Watsatch Academy and attended Snow College, both in Mt. Pleasant. Before her marriage, Chrystal taught school in Myton, Utah on the Ute Indian Reservation. On May 23, 1936, Chrystal married T. Nile Smith in Mt. Pleasant. They moved to Vernal, Utah, where their daughter Judy was born, then to Salt Lake City, where their daughter Susan was born. In 1948, the Smith's moved to Billings, Mont. Chrystal was a dedicated employee of the Hart Albin Store for 40 years. Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles, reading, playing the piano and her gardening and yard work, making her yard the envy of the neighborhood. Chrystal mowed her yard twice a week even into her 80s.
Survivors include her children, Judy (Robert) Wilson, Susan (John) Havener; grandchildren, Doug Wilson, Laurie (Gerald) Timmerman, Steve (Shelly) Wilson, Debi (Tom) Knutson; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister Lucille Lipphardt. Her husband T. Nile Smith preceded her in death as did brother Bill Hansen, sisters, twin Christie B. Hansen, Helen Cluff and Alyce Ashton.
Funeral services for Chrystal will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Mountview Cemetery. Memorial may be made to Lifespan Respite, 1501 14th Street West, Billings, MT 59102 or to Big Sky Hospice, Box 35033, Billings 59107.
