Francis M. Gebhart Francis Martin "Sonny" Gebhart, 85, of Springfield died Thursday at St.John's North. He was born July 11, 1911, near New Berlin, the son of Martin and Mary Maier Gebhart. He married Regina Gluick; she died in 1959. In 1975, he married Virginia W. Walbaum.
Mr. Gebhart worked as a bank trust clerk for Illinois National Bank; he retired in 1983. He also retired from Sangamon County Probate Clerk's Office.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Laffey, in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He received several commendations and seven combat stars.
He served for 36 years as a Republican precinct committeeman. He belonged to New Berlin American Legion Post 743 and KC Council 364. Survivors: wife, Virginia; four sisters, Margaret Donovan of East Peroia and Catherine R. Stapelton, Alma G. Stanton and Alta G. Zeller, all of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: Mass 10 a.m. Monday, Blessed Sacrament Church, the Rev. John C. Burnett and the Rev. Frank O'Hara officiating. Burial: Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
