Richard the husband of Marsha A. Gross, loving father of Michael G. Gross, the son of Matt Gross and Delores Gross all of Southfield Michigan; enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 31 1967 in Detroit. He arrived in Vietnam on February 10 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of September the Battalion continued to participate in operation LANCASTER II with its assigned mission of providing security of Camp J.J, Carroll, security of Landing Zone Mac,convoy escort and patrols in Quang Tri Province.

On September 3, Company C was providing security for LZ Mac (Hill 461) when the Marines position was hit with over 30 rounds of NVA 130mm artillery fire wounding two and killing two Marines. One of the casualties was LCpl Richard Gross who killed by fragmentation wounds from the hostile artillery fire.
