Early Resident, Dr. Copeland, Dies in La Jolla
In poor health since last winter when he was stricken with pneumonia while visiting in Oak Park, Dr. William Henry Copeland of La Jolla, Calif., and Oak Park died on Monday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John C. Howe, in La Jolla.
Dr Copeland had been convalescing in California after a winter illness and was much improved when he suffered a fatal stroke on Saturday night.
Among the early residents of the village, Dr. Copeland and his late wife, Frances Cole Copeland came to Oak Park to make their home in 1902 and resided at 408 Forest for many years.
Dr. Copeland was born and brought up in Hopedale, Ohio, where he maintained the family farm until a few years ago. For some time he practiced medicine in Pittsburgh and later established offices in nearly every large city in the United States, and he owned one of the largest eye, ear, nose and throat clinics in the country with branches in many large cities.
Residing in Oak Park, Dr. and Mrs. Copeland were widely known residents and had a large circle of friends. Their home was the acme of many social gatherings and in the early years of the century, their large garden was often the setting for beautiful parties.
After Mrs. Copeland's death, Dr. Copeland went to California to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. John C. Howe, in La Jolla, Since that time, he has divided his time between California and Oak Park, where he returned each year in May, about the time of his birthday, on May 24, and was a guest at the Louis F. Yager home. Customarily, he remained in Oak Park throughout the summer and returned to California in November.
Dr. Copeland leaves his two daughters, Mrs. Howe and Mrs. Frances E. Beachy of La Jolla and four grandchildren.
Private services took place Wednesday afternoon with temporary interment in La Jolla.
