Joseph Anthony Ryan was born on March 3, 1863 in Waukon, Iowa. He was the son of William Ryan and Bridget Boyle, and the brother of Mary, Margaret, Bridget Celia, Ann, Elizabeth, John, and James.
Joseph married Mary Ann Hoffman in 1897. They were the parents of eight children: William (Reverend William, SJ), Antoinette (Sister M. Avelina, IHM), Mary Bridgette (Sister Mary Clement, SP), Molley, Josephine Eustella, Theresa Agnes "Tracy", John Joseph, and Joseph J. The family lived in North Dakota, Washinton, Idaho, and settled in Spokane, WA, in approximately 1940.
In 1910, Joseph worked as a section boss on the railroad in Lamona, Washington, and in 1930 he worked as section foreman on the steam railway in Marcus, Washington.
Joseph died on February 3, 1936 in Marcus, WA, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane, Washington.
