Napan, 20, Is Killed In
Vietnam War Zone

Sp. 4 Jerry Ofstedahl, a 1967 graduate of Napa High School, is Napa County's 29th known casualty in the Vietnam war.

Notification of his death was received Saturday by his bride of two months, Claire Louise, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ofstedahl, 4800 Monticello Road.

The Army said the young Napa soldier died Wednesday, reportedly in the highlands near Quang Tri. He was the squad leader on a mission.

The 20-year-old Napan had worked on the Wild Horse Valley Ranch for Mr. and Mrs. Don Murray between his junior and senior year of high school, and was employed there full time before he entered the Army in April, 1968. He went to Vietnam the end of December.

He and his wife met on the ranch, where she is still employed as governess of the Murray children. During his rest and recreation leave in Tokyo, Japan they were married June 10. At the end of his leave, she returned to Napa.

Memorial services will be held here after the body arrives. Claire Ofstedahl said if legal arrangements can be made, her husband's remains will be cremated and the ashes interred at Wild Horse Valley Ranch.

Survivors include two younger sisters, Mary Ellen and Karen Leone Ofstedahl, both at the family home; grandparents, Mrs. Evelyn Nelson of Sacramento and Mr. and Mrs. John Ofstedahl Sr. of Thief River Falls, Minn.; an uncle, Orville Nelson of Thief River Falls, and numerous great-aunts and uncles, including Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Jernigan of Napa.
