Cdr. A . Dodge McFall, USN, died on 6 Dec. in the crash of a Skyhawk bomber following takeoff from the Bon Homme Richard during a night training flight off the coast of California. He was commanding officer of Attack Squadron 76, and had recently returned from Vietnam where he had flown 119 missions. Memorial services were held in the Naval Academy Chapel on 13 Dec.
Cdr. McFall, who was born in Baltimore, Md., attended St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Del., and was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1950. He was designated a naval aviator in January 1953 and reported to Attack Squadron 175 in the Atlantic Fleet. He had tours as aide and flag lieutenant to Chief of Naval Air Basic Training, Deputy Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, and the Superintendent, Naval Academy.
He served in five operational attack squadrons including VA-175, VA-105, VA-15, VA-75 and VA-65. He completed the Command and Staff course at the Naval War College in 1962. In October 1965 he became executive officer of VA-76 aboard USS Enterprise operating in the South China Sea, then became commanding officer.
Survivors include his widow, the former Jean Livingston of Jacksonville, Fla., and two children, Catherine Gardner and Albert Dodge McFall, Jr., of 4426 Country Club Road, Jacksonville; his parents, RAdm. and Mrs. Andrew C . McFall of Ponte Verde, Fla., and a brother, Andrew C. McFall, Jr., of St. Petersburg, Fla.
