He was the son of the late J.E. and Mary Miller Hayes and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Stella Inez "Bun" Johnson Hayes, December 22, 1983; a son, James P. Hayes Jr.; a sister, Eleanor Owens; and two brothers, Oran Hayes and Charles Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a member of West Side Church of Christ, Jonesborough. He was founder of Jim's Motorcycle Sales, Johnson City, which was established in 1937 and now has Jim's Motorcycle Sales of Kingsport and Atlas Honda - Yamaha, Bristol, Va. He was a member of the Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486 F&AM and was a Shriner.
He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2001in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home.
Graveside services and interment were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001 at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
