VICTORIA - Alfred George Horelka, 81, passed away on October 31, 2014. He was born in Inez on April 10, 1933 to the late Joe and Albina Matejicek Horelka. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from September 1955 through September 1961. and was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Alfred was born on his father's birthday. His Dad passed away when he was 2 years old and he was raised by his mother and step-father Joe Koutny.

Alfred was very proud of his two years active duty and four years as a reserve in the U. S. Army. He was in the 1st Calvary Division, 8th Regiment. He really enjoyed telling stories about his time spent in Iwo-Jima Japan and Korea on the 38th Parallel, right after the Korean war.

On October 17, 1959, Alfred married Evelyn Kabela, and they enjoyed 55 wonderful years together. Alfred was a hard working, generous person. Always willing to lend a hand to others in need. In his younger years he worked as a roughneck for several companies, moving from rig to rig as work was available. In 1967 he went to work for Houston Pipeline as a compressor supervisor. He worked for them for 26 years, always on 24 hour call. After work he enjoyed stopping at Wood-Hi Store to have a cold beer, and visit with his friends. His pride and joy was his family and 'mini ranch' where he raised his children with the help of his wife and mother of his children, Evelyn. Alfred loved to spend time with his 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Alfred has been an active member of SPJST Lodge 32 since 1970, serving as a building trustee for many years. He worked with the Lodge members on many fund raisers to help them purchase and maintain a building for their meetings, social gatherings and fraternal activities. After retiring from Enron in 1992, he volunteered with 'Friends of Wood-Hi' helping to renovate the old teachers building for their activities with the Wood-Hi School and community.

Alfred's beautiful blue eyes, wonderful smile and generous heart will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and anyone who met him. We know that Alfred is in his Heavenly home, spreading joy with his beautiful smile, and watching over everyone left behind.

In addition to his parents, Alfred is preceded in death by step-father, Joe Koutny.

Burial with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council, AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, EX-POW, MOPH, VVA, and KWV will be at Shillerville cemetery.

Arrangements under the care of Grace Funeral Home.
