ROCK HILL -- Mr. Darrell Richard Setliff, 83, passed away Friday, August 26, 2011, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 29, 2011, at St. John's United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave. with Rev. Debra Quilling Smith officiating. The family invites you to join them for lunch immediately following the service at the church. Burial will be private at a later date. Darrell was born on May 17, 1928, to the late Daniel Richard Setliff and Mary Ruth McCain Setliff of High Point, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Wolfe Setliff, of Greensboro, NC. Today, he is survived by his wife, Jolene Stepp Setliff; his children, son, Darrell Richard Setliff, Jr. and his wife, Sherry, daughter, Sandra Jane Setliff, all of Fletcher, NC; granddaughter, Megan Setliff Perrino and her husband, Chad, of Surfside Beach, SC; Jolene's children, Cathy Torres of Spartanburg, SC, Mike Melton and his wife, Marcia, Pam Cazel and her husband, Ed, Lisa Mullinax and her husband, Ricky, David Stepp and his wife, Linda, 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, all of Gaffney, SC; brother, Don Setliff of High Point, NC; nephew, Donald Kim Setliff and his wife, Joy, great-nephews, Kim Jr., Kyle, and Riley, all of High Point, NC; sister, Julia Faye Metcalfe of High Point, NC, nephew, Bruce Arnold Metcalfe, Jr. and his wife, Jody, great-nephew, Shawn and great-niece, Sarah Metcalfe Craven and husband, Andrew and great-great-nephew, Garrett, of Kernersville, NC. Darrell attended Grimsley High School (formerly Greensboro Senior High School) in Greensboro, NC, and served in World War II in the Maritime Service. He married Betty and moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he established Anchor Tile and Marble Company. Darrell returned to Charlotte, NC in 1961, where he co-owned the Charles Chips franchise with his partner Orbe Elam. The franchise served NC, SC, GA, TX and at one time reached as far as St. Louis, MO. Darrell and his partner, Orbe, also established Charles Investments, which built Airport Industrial Center in Charlotte, NC. In 1965, Darrell stepped away from his companies for one year. He and eleven of his fellow board members established Carmel Academy in Charlotte, NC, which later became Charlotte Country Day School. A member of Carmel Country Club, Darrell was an avid golfer and served on the golf, greens and grounds committees. In 1973 he became a member of Quail Hollow Country Club, where he chaired the interclub relations committee for the Kemper Open Golf tournament. Darrell loved the game of golf and with retirement found time to enjoy many rounds a year. His regular playing partners were the 'Shoot-Out Group' at Quail Hollow. This group of twenty or so would assemble after lunch on Tuesday and Thursday and at nine a. m. on Saturday. The golf was not always stellar, but the repartee and camaraderie were of the highest order. He never strayed from the rules and frowned on anyone who did. The same reverence was not extended to the rules of golf cart operation. Many stories were told in this group. Some were true. In the 1970's, Darrell and his business partner, Orbe, sold the Charles Chips company. In 1983 he sold Charles Investments and retired. During retirement, Darrell played golf frequently and could be found on the golf course with all of his buddies. He married Jolene Stepp Setliff in 2001, and moved to Rock Hill, SC, where he continued to enjoy retirement with his large extended family. Ever so humble, many of his own friends and family were not aware that he was truly a renaissance man: an accomplished pilot, builder and golfer, a ham radio operator, an entrepreneur, a Master Mason, a 33rd-degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner. A true southern gentleman, he served his community well. The family of Darrell Setliff would like to thank Dr. John Hoitink, Dr. Michael Denenberg, Matt Kyer PA-C and Piedmont Medical Center's third floor staff, especially the nurses, for the wonderful care he received during his stay there. 'You have helped us through a very difficult time with much skill, patience and compassion.' The family will receive friends from 4:30-6 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Setliff's name to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd, Greenville, SC 29605-4277; St. John's United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730; or Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
