Mrs. G. Augusta Tarleton died 27 Feb 1899, of pneumonia at the home of her son-in-law, H.R.
Buckingham, aged 89 (or 90) years, and was buried in Lexington, Ky., beside her husband. She was born in Georgetown, Ky., the daughter of Annie Garrard and Thomas Hawkins and was the oldest grandchild of Gov. Garrard of Kentucky and Capt. John Hawkins of the Revolutionary War. At the age of 17 she married George Washington, nephew and namesake of Gen. Washington. She then went to Virginia to live in the old Washington homestead until her husband died four years later. She returned to Kentucky to live with her parents 11 years and then married Leo Tarleton, of St. Mary’s Parrish, La. They also owned an elegant home in Lexington, Ky., and many slaves, but lost much of their wealth after the Civil War. Before or during the war her husband died. Afterwards she came to Illinois and lived on a farm north of Alto Pass. She had three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Buckingham, Dr. Thomas Tarleton of Patterson, La., and Leo Tarleton, a lawyer in San Antonio, Texas, survived her. (See also 11 Mar 1899, issue.)
