Life Legacy

Thelma Battles McRae, a precious daughter born to proud parents, Solomon and Maggie (Bell) Battles, Sr. on Saturday, September 14, 1918 in Live Oak, FL. She was 1 of 10 children in the Battles family.

By the time she reached the age of two, the family relocated to Palatka and she has resided in Palatka since 1920, except for one year that she resided in New York. Thelma was educated in the Putnam County School District. She was a very faithful member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church and sang in the choir for many years. Thelma united in marriage to Fred McRae who preceded her in eternal rest. She was employed at Machek Farms, where she worked with one of her most favorites, “Flowers” and was also employed by the Glisson family as a retail store clerk and housekeeper. She was a classy lady whose favorite color was “pink.” She enjoyed dressing in beautiful hats and outfits and her hobby including gardening.

“Aunt Thelma” was seen all over Palatka on her trademark Schwinn tri-cycle (an icon in the city of Palatka). “Aunt Thelma” was gifted with a photographic memory and had the ability to recall people, places, and things, with no apparent difficulty. She was also known for being feisty (never had a problem telling anyone what was on her mind and where they stood in her book). She had a huge heart, loved everyone and never met a stranger; always eager to share whatever she had with anyone.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in eternal rest by all of her siblings: Viola (Joseph) Edwards, Sr., Bertha (Julius) Edwards, Sr., Ethel Whaley, Sarah Lindsey, Esther Hart, Otis (Corene) Battles, Sr., Solomon Battles, Jr., Leroy Battles, Jr., Odis Battles and Kissimmee Battles.

“Aunt Thelma” entered the sunset of life peacefully taking her last breath on earth and her first breath into eternity on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Palatka Health Care Center. She arrived in the beautiful paradise of heaven, where she was welcomed by Jesus Christ.

To cherish her memories: a host of beloved nieces and nephews, including: Joyce Hostetler, Carolyn Edwards Wiggins, Wanda Jean Moore, Sandra (Alvestor) Mack, Valerie (Brad) Gross, Barbara (Billy)Dennard, Yvonne Battles, Queen Esther Lewis ,Erma Boyd Battles, Bruce Battles, Nastralita Battles, Winifred Walker, Joseph G.
