Civil War Veteran
Sergeant, Co. A, 18th Massachusetts Infantry

The son of Joseph G. and Sarah A. (Toye) Footman.

John married for the first time to Lydia C. Cable, age 19 and the daughter of Harvey and Naomi, on August 24, 1861 at New Bedford.

Just five days after his wedding, John, who was a 22 year Blacksmith from New Bedford, MA, enlisted at Boston on August 29, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on Oct. 12, 1861 as a Corporal in Co. A. He was promoted to Sergeant on Oct. 12, 1862. John was engaged with his Regiment in 1862 in the Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Shepherdstown, and Fredericksburg. Following the Battle of Fredericksburg, fought on Dec. 13, 1862, he was cited for bravery, along with four others from his Company, by Col. Joseph Hayes, regimental commander. He was further engaged in 1863 at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Rappahannock Station. He was mustered out of the army on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.

Following his military service John resided with his wife Lydia in New Bedford where he worked as a Blacksmith and later a Pension Agent. His wife Lydia died of Consumption at New Bedford on May 28, 1868.

John remarried a year later, on October 10, 1869 to Caroline F. Etheridge, then age 26 and the daughter of John and Anna H. (Matthews), the marriage taking place at New Bedford. The couple were the parents of Carrie E., born August 30, 1870, who never married and who became a public school teacher in New Bedford.

John, who was then employed as a Pension Agent, died of heart disease at his home, 59 Court St., New Bedford, MA.
