Virgil Harold Sommer, 82, a retired Wabash Township deputy assessor, died at 6 AM Monday, Nov. 17, 1988, at Westminster Health Center. He resided at Westminster Village and had been in failing health since July. Born at Edna Mills in Clinton County, he was a 1925 graduate of Rossville High School. His marriage was to Mary Catherine Hufford on June 14, 1931. She is a former music teacher and former owner of Spring Wheel Yarn Shop.

Mr. Sommer had lived in Lafayette and West Lafayette the past 60 years. He was deputy assessor of Wabash Township for 11 years, retiring in 1974. He previously was a salesman at Smith Shoe Co. for 25 years. He was a charter member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in West Lafayette, and was past president of the church trustees.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Dr. Robert K. Sommer of Elk River, MN, and Jon D. Sommer of Oakwood, IL; a daughter, Judith (Mrs. Charles) Paley of Phoenix, AZ; and eight grandchildren.
