JOSEPH R. RILEY

Loving Father and friend, Joe Riley of Lynn Haven, died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Joseph R. Riley was born on April 28, 1914, in Eufaula, Ala. Joe had been an outstanding football player for the University of Alabama from 1934 to 1937. He played with Paul "Bear" Bryant on the 1934 National Championship Team coached by Frank Thomas. Joe threw a touchdown pass to Don Hutson in the 1935 Rose Bowl Game when Alabama defeated Stanford. Joe was selected to the College All Star Football Squad in 1937. Joe was a USAF Ret. Lt. Colonel, who proudly served our country for 28 years. He was a WWII Veteran, having served with the 9th Bomb Group stationed on Tinian Island in the Pacific. Joe witnessed the take off of "Enola Gay" on its way to Japan. He was an instructor at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Award from the Air Force. He and his wife, Billy, moved to Lynn Haven in 1967. He instructed the first JROTC Program at Bay High School and taught until 1978. Joe was a Paul Harris Rotarian in the Lynn Haven Rotary Club. He was the first President of the Emerald Coast Red Elephant Club and the oldest member of the Alabama "A" Club. He was looking forward to being the honorary team captain for the November 13th Alabama-Miss State Game, honoring all "A" Club Veterans. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Panama City and a long time greeter for the LLL Sunday School Class.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Billy May Butler, daughter Billie Jo Lewis and son in law Chuck and son, Michael Butler Riley.

His surviving family includes son, Joe Lee Riley, daughter Pam Shemwell and partner Walter Barbo, daughter in law Susan Riley of Eagle River, Alaska. Joe has six Grandchildren, Cindy Rotharmel, Julie Lewis Stanley, Debbie Lewis, Michael Lewis, Gwynne Riley and Joanna Riley. He has four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank D. Asim Khattak and nurse Debbie of Primary Care, the entire staff of Covenant Hospice for their "special kind of caring", the First Baptist Church family for their prayers and support, and a special thanks to our neighbors and friends.

A funeral service will be held at Kent Forest Lawn Chapel on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening, October 4, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.
