Helen Mary Meyers, 93, of Iowa City, died Friday, October 31, 2014 at Solon Care Center.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father John Spiegel Celebrating. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary Church Altar and Rosary or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.

Helen was born April 7, 1921 in Dyersville, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Wilhelmina (Koopman) Goerdt. She graduated from Iowa State Teacher’s College. Helen served as a Navy WAVE during World War II. She married Vincent Meyers October 30, 1948 in Dyersville, Iowa. Helen worked as a secretary in the audio-visual department at Naperville Central High School for 15 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of St. Mary Church, Altar & Rosary Society and was a volunteer for the Mercy Hospital Guild.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Tom) Hunt of Rock Island, Illinois and Carol (Mark) Callaghan of Iowa City; six grandchildren Jennifer (Brian Schultz), Jeff, and Ryan Hunt, and Jason (Erika), Kyle (Hannah), and Brent Callaghan; and her sister, Marie (John) Brueckner of Dyersville, Iowa.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers Al, Cletus, Joe, Brother Edwin, and Brother Arthur Goerdt; her sister Olivia Krapfl and grandson John Callaghan.
