James Otis Church, age 87 of Winchester, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Willows in Winchester. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He defended his country during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. Mr. Church was a lifelong member of the Winchester Church of Christ where he served as a deacon until his health began to decline. He enjoyed watching the construction of the Vanzant building at the church. He worked with Little League for many years, beginning as an umpire and finally by coaching Rotary. Preceding him in death were his parents, Otis Church and Ruth Hatchett Church and two grandchildren, Leah and Lindsay Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pauline Scott Church; two children, Debbie (Steve) Myers of Bell Buckle and Gary (Ruth) Church of Harvest, Alabama; and four grandchildren, Scott and Jamie Myers of, and Landon and Lauren Church. Visitation was held on Sunday, December 18, 2011 from 5 - 8 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ed Bogess officiating. Interment was in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester. Mr. Church's grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers: Scott Myers, James Myers, Landon Church, Jeff Scott, Todd Scott, and Kenneth Scott. Honorary pallbearers were the church elders: Grady Floyd, Oren Huffman, Ben Lynch, Frank Lynch, Mike Lynch, Mike Roggli, Richard Rumph, T. Simmons, and Josh Tenpenny. Memorials may be given to the Winchester Christian Academy or to the Franklin County Christian Scholarship through the Winchester Church of Christ.
